Avondale Estates, Ga. – As relief groups from around the country head to Texas and the Gulf Coast to assist with the recovery from Hurricane Harvey, the City of Avondale Estates announced efforts to collect needed supplies for the region. The City of Avondale Estates will open a donation drop-off point for the victims of Hurricane Harvey Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 8 – 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing the local and surrounding communities to conveniently donate needed items for those in the path of this destructive storm. The drop-off point will be those in the path of this destructive storm. The drop-off point will be at the former credit union facility at 64 North Avondale Road, located at the corner of Oak Street and North Avondale Road.
As Hurricane Harvey wreaks havoc on homes and communities across Southeastern Texas and Southwestern Louisiana—producing up to 50 inches of rain in some areas— communities like the City of Avondale Estates are helping families face devastating losses from the historic flooding by coordinating collections for those wanting to donate supplies to those in need. While water is receding, rescues are ongoing and evacuation orders are in still effect throughout the region. Numerous hospitals and nursing facilities have relocated patients and residents. Public transportation is at a halt. Schools are closed and hundreds of thousands of people are still without power.
The City of Avondale Estates will be collecting donations of blankets, sleeping bags, air mattresses, pillows and towels. Also needed are personal toiletries such as new toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotions, shampoo, and deodorant. Additionally, household cleaning products and laundry detergent are requested, as are non-perishable snack foods, board games, coloring books/crayons, and playing cards. The items will be donated to relief organizations such as the American Red Cross for delivery to the impacted region.
