Signage Scavenger Hunt

If you are looking for something fun, community focused, and helpful to do, you are invited to be a part of the decision-making process to set policy that impacts the character and aesthetics of your own community. Shake off the cobwebs from quarantine, and join the Shape Avondale Estates Sign Scavenger Hunt. Participating is fun and easy…you just need a camera or search engine and an internet connection to send your responses.

The Scavenger Hunt materials feature examples of 13 different types of signs you might find around town. Based on the characteristics of each sign type – size, location, illumination, and style, you will be finding your own signs that fit into these categories. For instance, is there a sign on your walk downtown with individual letters and illuminated from inside? That’s a wall sign made with channel letters. If you want to submit it, take a photo, and use the instructions for how to post it online and identity it as the correct sign type. Limit your entries to a maximum of three (3) signs of each type. To complete the Scavenger Hunt, submit examples for at least five (5) sign types.

As you take your virtual or in-person strolls, take note of all the different sign types and styles. Is there one style you think should be used Downtown? Are there certain styles that shouldn’t be allowed at all? Signs are everywhere—they have the ability to define and contribute to the character of an area, and they have the ability to proliferate and detract from it. Sign Codes are one tool cities have to establish those outcomes.

Your “Hunt” can be conducted online or on your social-distanced travels around town (inside or outside the City). Tell us whether the signs you find are the ones you would like to see in the City, or ones you’d rather do without. To share your findings, please upload to Instagram using the following hashtags #Avondalesigns and #(Insert Sign Category). Or submit via e-mail to rkeefer@cplteam.com with your photos labeled with the sign category. If you’re submitting more than one photo per category, be sure to add a count to the file name (i.e.:  wall sign 1.jpg, wall sign 2.jpg, etc). Be sure to include commentary in your caption or body of your email as to whether you want to see it in the City or not.

Completed answers are due on June 15, 2020. Your Hunt submittals enter you for a chance to win a gift card to a local restaurant, and your entries could be used in the Avondale Estates Sign Code!
