Thanks to the sponsors of this year's race.

The City celebrated the official end of the summer 2019 with the 41st Annual Labor Day 5K and 1 mile races to benefit the Emory ALS Center. Both races included chip timing for more accurate race results. This year’s race was dedicated to Avondale Estates Resident Becky Kidd who lost her battle with ALS last year.

This event was again a great success due to the hard work of all the volunteers, runners, and walkers. City associates who helped to organize the event included the Avondale Estates Police Department, administrative staff members Karen Holmes and Rebecca Long; and City Public Works associates Dwayne Barber, Ben Hammonds, Sean Luttery, Norris Robinson, and Jarvis Session. Avondale Estates First Baptist Church provided fruit and drinks, continuing their many years of service to the race. Boy Scout Troop #6 members Edward Dieser, Sam Lynch, Drew Knoer, Adam Knoer, Kellett Owen, Nick Robson, Colin Woods, Owen Nesbit, Walter Beaubien, and Parker Harvey manned the water stations as they have for many years, along with local residents Donald Harvey, Brian Beaubien, and Mike Robson. The following dedicated volunteers this year handled race registration, distribution of ribbons, finishing time cards, photography, and shirt distribution: Kathy Kingsbury, Melitta Brandt, Martha McDermott, Norman McDermott, Anthony Calcagno, Patricia Calcagno, Mary Ellen Moore, Charlene Long, and Griffin Long.

Race Coordinator Alan Harvey provided the logistical support and stepped up to the plate again, while Don Connelly continued his great T-shirt design work. Thanks to race announcer David Poteet (who doubled as the announcer and lead off person for the race), and to Georgia Runner Event Timing. Finally, thanks to Mayor Jonathan Elmore for helping distribute the awards.

Originally, created to benefit The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, the event now benefits the Emory ALS Center. Additional donations can be made directly to the Emory ALS Center, Attn: Camille Sears, Associate Director of Development, Brain Health and Neurosciences, 1440 Clifton Road NE, Suite 170, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Congratulations to everybody who had fun and exercised for a good cause! Mark your calendars for the 42nd Annual Labor Day Race on September 7, 2020!
